Bogibeel Bridge, India's longest railroad bridge



Bogibeel Bridge in Assam is India's longest railroad bridge and Asia’s 2nd longest rail-road bridge. The foundation of Bogibeel Bridge was laid in 1997. The 4.94 Km structure spans the Brahmaputra River. This Railroad Bridge will connect Dibrugarh and Dhemaji districts of Assam.this bridge is 20 kilometer away from Assam–Arunachal Pradesh border thus it will provide connectivity to the people residing in Assam and Arunachal Pradesh, due to its location this Rail-road bridge has strategic importance for India’s defence, it has been designed to bear the battle tanks and fighter jets



Ten things to know about Bogibeel Bridge


1. This bridge has two line railway tracks which will provide rail connectivity and a three lane road on top deck which will provide road connectivity through National Highway 15.

2. This 4.9 km-long, rail-cum-road bridge is constructed at an estimated cost of Rs. 5900 crore, project cost escalated from its initial budget about Rs. 3200 crore.

3. The foundation stone of the bridge was laid by the then Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda on  22 January 1997, while construction of this Bridge began on 21 April 2002.

4. Bogibeel Bridge will reduce train-travel time from Delhi to Dibrugarh by about 3 hours. This rail-cum road bridge will also reduce travel time from Assam to Arunachal Pradesh to 4 hours.

5. This Rail-Road Bridge will provide better connectivity in northeast. This rail-and-road bridge will reduce distance to Northeast region by 170 kilometers.



6. Bogibeel Bridge has tremendous significance for defence movement along the India- china border, has been designed to bear the weight of 60 tonne battle tanks and fighter jets can land on it.

7. This bridge rail-cum-road bridge is the fourth longest bridge of India after Bandra-worli sea bridge, Mahatma Gandhi Setu and Bhupen Hazarika Setu , it is the second longest bridge in Assam.

8. Bogibeel Bridge, Asia's second longest rail- road bridge, has a serviceable period of around 120 years, authorities have said.



9. This Rail-cum-road bridge is India’s only bridge to have fully welded-steel, reinforced concrete support beams.

10. By the opening of this bridge , the train travel-time from Dibrugarh, Assam to Itanagar capital of Arunachal Pradesh has been reduced by 750 Km.

The Bogibeel Bridge will play an important role for the people of the remote areas of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, including tourism and economic activity
