J.F.K. international airport

John F Kennedy is an international airport situated in Queens Country, on long island in southwestern New York City .This airport is the busiest international airports which transfer passengers to the United States. It is 12 miles or 9km away from the Lower Manhattan. It is the 12th busiest airports in the world. In 2009 the airport handled 45,915,069 passengers. Approximately 90 airlines operate out of this international airport .this is a major international hub for American airlines and delta air airlines. This airport is operated by the Port authority of New York and New Jersey. This authority also manages two other airports in New York metropolitan area which are new arc Liberty and La Guardia Airport.

In 1942 New York City began placing hydraulic fill over the marshy tidelands of Idle wild Golf Course in order to make an airport. Initially the plan was to make a 1000 acre airport, but when its construction was completed it reached to almost 5000 acres. Commercial flights started in July 1948. Initially the airport was named as Idle wild Airport. On December the airport was renamed John F Kennedy International airport. John F Kennedy was the 35th president of the country. Now JFK is the country’s leading International airports, with more than 80 airlines operating from its gates.

The airport opened with six runways and seventh was under construction. The port authority originally envisioned a single 55-gate terminal for the airport. The major airlines of the airport at that time did not agree to this decision. They argued that the terminal would be too small for the future traffic. Then Wallace Harrison, an architect, designed a master plan under which each major airline at the airport would be given its own space to develop its own terminal design. This plan made the terminal more navigable.

Airlines began scheduling jets into the airport in 1958. During 1960-1966 the airport got new terminals and longer runways. Currently JFK is undergoing a $10.3 billion redevelopment of air train JFK rapid transit system in 1998and completed in 2003. The rail network links each airport terminal to the New York City subways and regional commuter trains at Howard Beach and Jamaica Queens. On March 19, 2007 JFK became the first airport in US to receive the Airbus A380 with passenger aboard.

JFK has eight passenger terminals which contain 151 gates. The terminal buildings are arranged in deformed u-shaped wavy pattern around a central area .this central area contains parking, hotels, a power plant and some other airport facilities. Way finding signage was designed by Paul Mijbsenaar. JFK ranks second in overall traveler satisfaction among large airports in US.

Airport’s contribution to the economy of New York City is about $30.1. It generates 229,000 jobs and about $9.8 billion in wages and salaries. Airport employs about 35000 people. The five largest airlines at JFK are:

-Jet-blue Airways (25.5%)

-Delta Airlines (21.9%)

- American Airlines (16.7%)

-British Airways (2.8%)

-Air France (1.9%)

From over 50 countries, about 100 airlines operate regularly scheduled flights from JFK. JFK is the nation’s busiest International air freight gateway by value of shipments.
